Historically, raspberry leaf herbal cigarettes were introduced by the Indians. In addition to treatment, herbal cigarettes were also used in religious rituals and certain events. Raspberry leaf does not contain nicotine so it can be used as an alternative for those who want to stop smoking. Raspberry leaf contains many compounds such as tannins, flavonoids, ellagic acid,vitamin A, C, potassium, calcium and phosphorus.
Raspberry leaf is also useful a useful support with diseases such as diabetes, menstrual disorders, fertility disorders, and diarrhea.

Culinary Uses for Raspberry

When first considering raspberry leaf benefits, the first thing that comes to mind is the great nourishment it provides the body.

Nourishing herbs are considered by herbalists as a healthful food source. Herbs such as nettle, dandelion leaf, chickweed, and oatstraw have a high content of many nutritive vitamins and minerals. Raspberry leaf (Rubus idaeus, R. strigosus, R. parviflorus) is no exception! These herbs, when eaten or made into teas and infusions, have many nutrients that are made easily available to our bodies.

The calcium, iron, and magnesium found in raspberry leaf are often the very nutrients that women’s bodies need. Other vitamins and minerals present in raspberry leaves include vitamins A, B1, B2, and B3 as well as vitamins C and E, manganese, niacin, and selenium (Gladstar, 2001; MyIntyre, n.d.; Young, n.d).

  • 408 mg calcium
  • 446 mg potassium
  • 106 mg magnesium
  • 3.3 mg iron
  • 4 mg manganese

Preparations & Dosage:

Infusion: pour a cup of boiling water onto 2 teaspoonfuls of the dried herb and let infuse for l0-l5 minutes. This may be drunk freely.
Tincture: take 3-5 ml of a 1:5 tincture 3x/day.

Raspberry leaf is often thought of as an astringent for the digestive tract (it is very helpful for diarrhea) and reproductive system tonic, but can also be used for the skin. Raspberry leaf is tonic and mineral rich, containing calcium, magnesium and manganese. Raspberry plants are easy to find in the wild-gather the young leaves before the plant begins to flower or fruit.

Safety:

  • Do not drink raspberry or blackberry leaf tea if you are in the first 32 weeks of pregnancy, as it may induce premature labor.
